Ducks Wire: Mario Cristobal doesn't sound like a coach who is staying at Oregon

Ducks Wire: Mario Cristobal doesn't sound like a coach who is staying at Oregon

When everyone went to bed late Friday night, Mario Cristobal had not yet made any firm commitment. He did not shut the door on rumors and whispers that he is heading to Miami to coach the Hurricanes, his alma mater. He did not definitively say he is staying at Oregon and that he has turned Miami down.

Coaches have been known to consider an offer, sleep on it, and then reject it when they wake up the next morning. Joe Paterno was believed to be the next coach of the New England Patriots in 1973. However, he slept on an offer and rejected it the next day. Interestingly enough, the man who became the next Patriots coach in 1973 was Chuck Fairbanks. He was the last Oklahoma football head coach to leave for another job until a guy named Lincoln Riley moved to USC this past week.

When we went to bed Friday night, Mario Cristobal had not reportedly received an offer from Miami to coach The U in 2022. However, he had left the door open to that possibility. It certainly raises questions.

Our friends at Ducks Wire were on site in Las Vegas after Oregon lost to Utah in the Pac-12 Championship Game. Zachary Neel filed a report which included this press conference excerpt:

Question: Mario, what do you say to the fans and the people that support this program when there’s uncertainty of your future in 2022?

Cristobal: I would say that if there’s anything to report, I would report it. I always have. I think over the years, maybe because certain things, or something that are actually put out there or not, every year our entire staff, whether it’s behind the scenes, whether it’s public or not, we’ve always had different people come for our people, including myself. How the media treats it and how they choose to posture, I have no control over. And certainly, again, like I mentioned before, that’s the extent of it.

That certainly reads like a prolonged word-salad answer in which a coach is trying to say nothing. If Cristobal was securely at Oregon, he likely would have answered in a very different way.

Cristobal might not be gone to Miami. He could simply be sleeping on this choice. However, it seems safe to say that as of early Saturday morning, Cristobal is definitely weighing this choice and struggling with his decision.

We — and Ducks Wire — will keep you posted on this story.
