Potato chips are well-loved snacks for so many reasons—they’re savory, crispy, and crunchy. And perhaps no brand is more synonymous with potato chips than Lay’s. The brand’s chips were enjoyed by more than 15 million Americans in 2020, according to one study. And it’s not just Americans who love eating Lay’s potato chips—Lay’s is a beloved brand around the world, with countless varieties featuring local flavors. If you’re among Lay’s millions of fans: listen up, because changes are coming to the snack brand.

How Lay’s Potato Chips Are Changing

In a press release earlier this month, PepsiCo, the parent company that owns Lay’s, said that it would be reformulating the majority of its convenience foods as a part of two new ambitious nutrition goals. At least three-quarters of PepsiCo’s foods will be reformulated to meet or be lower than the sodium target set by the World Health Organization by 2030.

Specifically, the press release highlighted U.S. Lay’s Classic Potato Chips, stating it aims to reduce Lay’s sodium content by 15%. The chips, along with PepsiCo’s other convenience foods, will also feature more “diverse ingredients, such as legumes, whole grains, plant-based proteins, fruits and vegetables, and nuts and seeds,” in an effort to improve the snacks’ nutritional profile. So how will these changes affect the final product?

Will You Be Able to Taste the Difference?

If you just so happen to be a supertaster, you may notice a slight difference in the chip flavor, but chances are you won’t be able to detect any change in Lay’s Potato Chips’ appearance or taste. Lay’s will likely be able to keep their chips the same with support from PepsiCo’s cutting-edge research and development teams to fine-tune its products by using herbs, spices, and seasonings. Plus, PepsiCo is committed to collaborating with potato farmers to grow potatoes that deliver the flavor customers have come to expect.

So, don’t panic—there’s no reason to stock up on potato chips, because you will likely end up with something that tastes like the same Lay’s you know and love, only a little better for you.
