Style influencer for so many women before it ever had a title, Marilyn Monroe was the greatest female icon of the 20th century.
From her peroxide hair to her curves, there has been no other woman that had such an impact on our fashion and beauty ideals.
Even now, nearly 60 years after her death, her style and beauty look is still copied and examined for details and inspiration.
One product most associated with Marilyn is her lipstick, that daring red she wore on repeat. Layered methodically in three layers on film sets, that glossy red is such a cult lipstick it is the berry red we want for autumn. Here’s how it came to be originally.
Marilyn Monroe’s Iconic Red Lip
It’ll be no surprise to beauty history fans that the brand behind the shade is Max Factor, he was at the forefront of the development of makeup back in the day.
The makeup artist and creator first arrived in Hollywood during the silent movie era, making specific makeup like greasepaint to cover skin and work with the lights and black and white film.
With the new age of colour, and especially Technicolor, everything changed and Max Factor changed with it. Factor apparently struck deals with the bigger studios, getting them to let their big-name actresses feature in his ads in exchange for supplying the studios with makeup.
Creating Film Star Beauty
Actresses like Joan Crawford, Claudette Colbert, Jean Harlow and Clara Bow were all associated with the Max Factor brand. Pretty soon, American women wanted in on the Russian-born MUAs makeup pieces.
It was in the 1940s though that Max Factor’s son Max Jr worked with the young actress, helping her perfect the beauty look we all know and love. And that’s when Marilyn’s signature red lipstick became the stuff of legend.
Ruby Red was the shade’s name, a true berry red that highlighted the creamy skin and platinum hair that Marilyn Monroe was so famous for.
Marilyn Lives On
Marilyn was born June 1st 1926, sadly dying on August 5th 1963 aged just 36. If Marilyn was alive she would be 95, but that not even stopped her from being an ambassador for beauty brands.
In 2013 she was named as the face for Chanel No.5, the scent she famously said was all she wore to bed.
And then two years later Max Factor launched the Marilyn Monroe lipstick collection, a four-piece line that contains Ruby Red. If you want to try the shade yourself you’ll have to hunt it down but might find it on Amazon or sites like it. We’re going to shop for a cool berry red just like it, there are plenty out there.Internet Explorer Channel Network
