Government, opposition MPs react to foreign interference report
As democracies around the world grapple with the threat posed by foreign interference, it is especially important that we work together as we did in the lead up to the establishment of this public inquiry, to uphold Canadians trust in our democratic institutions. Protecting our democracy from foreign interference must always be a non partisan effort. Canada has robust safeguards in place to protect our democracy and the Government of Canada continuously adjust these measures. To meet the long standing and continuously evolving threat, the work of the Commission will support Canada’s ability to continue to adapt our measures. We look forward to reviewing in detail this initial report as part of our effort, as part of our efforts to further bolster the resilience of our election processes and democratic institutions. Justice Hall concluded that while it’s impossible to prove this because we have a secret ballot in Canada. That it it that the that it did impact in her language. The broader electoral system, it undermined public confidence, disproportionately targeted diaspora communities, and that it reasonably one could reasonably conclude that it could have had an impact at the riding level. And so this report is a damning set of conclusions and findings in the first phase of this inquiry. About what the Trudeau government has indicated over the last 18 months and contradicts much of what the government has told us over that period of time, I think it’s reassuring for Canadians to know that foreign interference did not change the results of the 2019 and 2021 elections. That being said, she is very clear in speaking to the presence of foreign interference and the potential that that could have a a preponderance impact in the coming years. So we need to prepare. We need to make sure as a country that we are ready. At the very latest, elections will be held next year.
