This is cool to see. The first thing they do is take a big heaping spoonful of baking cocoa powder. Then they pour a small bowl of milk. Next, they fully submerge the spoonful of cocoa into the milk. When it’s removed, they insert a toothpick into the center. Like magic, it seems to dry the powder out instantly. What? This is so cool!

We didn’t have the science lesson when we were in school, so we had to do a little research to understand how this worked. According to this article, it’s because cocoa powder is hydrophobic. This means it cannot be easily dissolved in water. So when the toothpick is inserted, it breaks the seal. This makes it look like it immediately dried out.

While we were doing this research, we also learned that when we eat these foods, they help fill us up and keep us satisfied. Other types of hydrophobic foods include chia seeds, okra, oatmeal, pears, chickpeas, Brussels sprouts, barley, oranges, and kidney beans. Who knew? We will have to try eating more of them.
