The UK’s new polar research ship, the RRS Sir David Attenborough, has come up the Thames ahead of undertaking its first expedition.
The £200 million vessel, named after the veteran TV naturalist, is the ship the public wanted to call “Boaty McBoatface” in an online poll before ministers intervened.
The ship will spend a few days at the home of the Prime Meridian to enable the public to see it and to mark the start of the COP26 climate conference, which begins on Sunday in Glasgow.
Despite missing out on the “Boaty McBoatface” name, a yellow submarine on the ship does carry the moniker.
It was given the name as a compromise after officials felt it would be too embarrassing to give the state-of-the-art polar vessel a joke name.
