Investigation into financial policy of old Barcelona administration
4:57 PM: The Spanish Public Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation into the previous board of FC Barcelona, which was led by president Josep Maria Bartomeu. It must become clear whether the club’s old policymakers have adhered to the financial rules. The Public Prosecution Service has taken action after a complaint from Joan Laporta. The current Barcelona president has had the financial policies of his predecessors analyzed.
Barcelona faced a debt of 1.35 billion euros when Laporta was appointed as new president in March last year. Six months earlier, Bartomeu resigned under pressure from many supporters, who accused him, among other things, of not maintaining a good relationship with Lionel Messi. Under Bartomeu’s leadership, Barcelona spent a lot of money on footballers who failed to realize their huge transfer amount.
Barcelona is having a disappointing season due to lack of financial resources. The club has already been eliminated from the Champions League and the national cup tournament. The team of Orange internationals Frenkie de Jong, Memphis Depay and Luuk de Jong is in fifth place in the Spanish league.
Five hockey internationals longer at Kampong, Kellerman leaves
1.25 pm: Kampong has held on to internationals Jip Janssen, Lars Balk, Silas Lageman, Terrance Pieters and David Harte for longer. Bjorn Kellerman leaves the Utrecht club from the main division. The 31-year-old striker, who played 69 international matches for the Orange, does not yet know whether he will continue with another club after this season.
“It’s time for other things, but first do everything you can to finish off as nicely as possible at Kampong,” said Kellerman, who, like Pieters, was kept out of the Olympic selection by the then national coach Max Caldas last year. Orange already stranded in Tokyo in the quarterfinals.
Pieters (25) did extend his contract with Kampong. Captain Balk (25) and penalty corner specialist Janssen (24) signed for four years. The 20-year-old Lageman, captain of the Dutch Juniors, and the Irish keeper Harte (33) also remain loyal to Kampong. “By extending these top players, we are laying a new foundation to also be at the top of the Dutch big league in the coming years,” said former international Roderick Weusthof, now a board member of top hockey in Utrecht. Kampong is in second place in the league, behind Bloemendaal.
Return of world champion Coleman in New York after doping suspension
12.25 pm: American sprinter Christian Coleman, still the reigning world champion in the 100 meters, will make his return to the track on Saturday after his 18-month doping ban. The 25-year-old athlete competes in the 60 meters at the Melrose Games, an indoor competition in New York.
Coleman was initially given a two-year suspension for missing three doping controls within a year, but the international sports tribunal CAS showed some leniency and reduced the suspension to 18 months. Nevertheless, Coleman missed the Tokyo Olympics, where Italian Lamont Marcell Jacobs surprisingly took the gold in the 100 meters.
Coleman is the world record holder in the 60 meters (6.34 seconds). The American has set the necessary goals for 2022. He wants to extend his world title in the 60 meters in Belgrade, but also become world champion again in the 100 meters at the global title fight in Eugene.
Positively tested chess player Doebov leaves the Wijk aan Zee tournament
12.13 pm: Russian chess player Daniil Doebov has to leave Tata Steel Chess in Wijk aan Zee. The 25-year-old grandmaster has tested positive for the corona virus. He misses the last three rounds.
The results that his opponents achieved in the matches against Dubov so far remain in the tournament. The opponents who would play against him in the last three rounds win those games by law.
The Norwegian Magnus Carlsen in particular benefits from this. The world champion is the leader after ten rounds and would face Dubov in the last round on Sunday. He receives a precious point as a gift.
Earlier in the tournament, the Dutch grandmaster Anish Giri already received a point as a gift. That was in the seventh round, when Dubov failed to appear at the board. The Russian was asked to play with a mouth cap because someone close to him was infected with corona, but he refused on principle.
Giri will now be disappointed that Carlsen gets an extra point in the decisive phase of the tournament due to the disappearance of Doebov. The Dutchman is second in the standings with half a point less than the Norwegian, who is well on his way to his eighth overall victory in Tata Steel Chess.
“I am very sorry for Daniil that he now has to leave our tournament,” said tournament director Jeroen van den Berg. “The entire Tata Steel Chess organization sympathizes with him, wishes him a lot of strength in this difficult period and expresses the hope that the rest of the year may be successful for him in sporting terms.”
Lakers miss star player James and lose to ‘Sixers’ in NBA
9.08 am: The Philadelphia 76ers basketball players have booked a big win over the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA. The home team won 105-87, thanks in part to top scorer Joel Embiid, who scored 26 points.
The Lakers missed star LeBron James with a sore knee. Anthony Davis had to take the honors and did so with 31 points. He was unable to take his team sufficiently by the hand against the ‘Sixers’, who mainly aimed from a distance and scored thirteen 3-pointers in the game.
Golden State Warriors dealt with Minnesota Timberwolves: 124-115. Top scorer Stephen Curry was good for 29 points. At Minnesota, Karl-Anthony Towns made 31 points.
