Norway’s new National Museum to open on June 11, 2022

Norway’s new National Museum to open on June 11, 2022

In exactly one year, the doors of the new National Museum on Vestbanen in Oslo will finally open – after several postponements.

Minister of Culture Abid Raja (V) announced the opening date at a digital event on Friday afternoon.

He used the opportunity to pay tribute to the new museum building.

“The Norwegian National Museum is a building, a house, a home for art and culture that is second to none – not even Guggenheim or Tate. An international building open to the world, which places us in the highest elite in the international art world,” Raja said.

Several postponements

The red-green government approved the construction of the Nordic region’s largest art museum in 2013. It was supposed to open in the autumn of 2020, but after several postponements, it should be ready next year.

The new National Museum will house over 100,000 works over 55,000 square meters.

“The new building gives us completely new opportunities to fulfill the National Museum’s task of making art accessible to anyone and everyone,” museum director Karen Hindsbo said.

Price tag of over NOK 6 billion

More than 5,000 works will be displayed in the permanent exhibition, including famous older paintings and contemporary art, fashion, design, textiles, handicrafts, and sculptures.

The price tag for the construction project is NOK 6.1 billion.
