Weather: Sunny 64F highs will end tomorrow with torrential rain

Britain will enjoy a last day of calm weather today before being lashed with torrential rain and seeing a drop in temperatures over the next week.

The south of England will see the best weather today with sunny spells and 64F (18C) while the rest of the country will have warm weather mixed with drizzle.

It follows another chilly night, with temperatures as low as 35.6F (2C) being recorded in central England.

But after a small reprieve of warmer temperatures on Monday, a cold spell is expected to come into full flow into this week, after a weather system moves in from the Atlantic bringing rain which is expected to continue on through to Tuesday.

Thermometers are expected to nosedive by Thursday, and even put parts of the UK in the firing line for hail and snow.

This means Britons could be bracing for a stormy and possibly wintry conditions in the run up to Halloween and Bonfire Night.

A Met Office spokesperson said: ‘Sunday will be a cloudy day for many of us and there will be also rain and drizzle in places but some sunny weather will turn across southern England and there will also be some sunshine across the far north of Scotland.

‘Generally unseasonally warm for the time of year with highs of 15C or 16C quite widely and perhaps as high as 17C or 18C in the south.’

Colder weather is then expected as the jet stream sinks southwards, kicking high pressure to the kerb and ending the settled spell.

A series of Atlantic storm systems will then plough into Britain with powerful winds and downpours.

Jim Dale, meteorologist for British Weather Services, said: ‘A very turbulent period of weather is one the way bringing a big change from the calm conditions we have seen lately.

‘Low pressure will push in from the Atlantic through the start of the week carrying a lot of rain and putting parts of the country at risk of gales.

‘It will turn colder later in the week and there could be a risk of snow which if it comes, will fall over the hills of Scotland.

‘The stormy pattern is expected to hold out until end of the month with a very wet, windy, and possibly stormy, Halloween on the cards.’

Mr Dale said: ‘Two low-pressure systems will affect the weather on Monday and Tuesday dragging mild air in from the south, and in London we could see 20C.

‘Heavy downpours will bring a real risk of flooding to parts of the country as these low-pressure systems come in from the Atlantic.

A Met Office spokesperson said: ‘Sunday will be a cloudy day for many of us and there will be also rain and drizzle in places but some sunny weather will turn across southern England and there will also be some sunshine across the far north of Scotland’. ‘Through the second half of the week there will be a change in wind direction from southerly to more northerly and this will make it feel colder.

‘It is time to get ready for a big change in the weather with a real witches brew in the run up to Halloween.’

Britain may need to wrap up for an early winter freeze, according to some long-range forecasts.

Exacta Weather’s James Madden warned an early winter whiteout may hit before the end of this month.

He said: ‘There will be a greater risk for snow events during the final third of the month, and these are more likely across higher ground.

‘This will come with a significant drop in temperatures and widespread frosts across the country during the final week of October.

‘There is a chance we could see a cold and wintery end to autumn.’
