FM urges int’l community to take a stand against hate speech
Amman, March 23 (Petra) — Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi called on the international community to take a clear and direct stand against hate speech and incitement that fuel violence and conflict in occupied Palestine and violate common norms and values.
During a phone call on Wednesday with the European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, Safadi pointed to the danger of extremist racist ideology, which manifested in a “reckless and disgusting manner” in the statements and actions of the Israeli Minister of Finance, who denied the existence of the Palestinian people and their historical rights and presented a map of Israel that includes the occupied state of Palestine and Jordan at a conference in Paris earlier this week.
He stressed that the Israeli government should bear the responsibility for “hate speech, racist incitement, and the disgusting behavior of the Israeli Minister of Finance,” adding that it must declare its rejection openly and clearly.
“Staying silent in the face of such statements and racist positions under the pretext of protecting government coalition is unacceptable and dangerous, and will only fan the flames of tension and further spread this extremist ideology,” Safadi continued.
For his part, Borrell denounced the Israeli Finance Minister’s statements, describing them as “dangerous and unacceptable,” stressing the need for the Israeli government to take a stand that asserts that these statements do not represent it. He said the European Union rejects all unilateral Israeli measures, underscoring its firm position that supports the two-state solution as a way to achieve peace.
Safadi and Borrell discussed the dangerous deterioration in the occupied Palestinian territories, underlining the need to stop all steps and measures that fuel violence and conflict and undermine the chances of achieving a just and comprehensive peace based on the two-state solution.
They discussed the outcomes of the recent Aqaba and Sharm El-Sheikh meetings on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and the Kingdom’s efforts to find a political horizon that would re-launch serious and effective negotiations to resolve the conflict on the basis of the two-state solution, which guarantees an independent and sovereign Palestinian state on the lines of June 4, 1967 with east Jerusalem as its capital.
Safadi lauded the European Union’s positions that support the two-state solution, reject unilateral Israeli measures and stress the need to respect the historical and legal status of Islamic and Christian holy sites in occupied Jerusalem, in addition to its position that deplores racist hate speech in all its forms.
The phone call also tackled the distinguished Jordanian historical partnership with the European Union, as Safadi and Borrell underscored commitment to develop them in various fields.
