Jabalpur: A section of the fabric canopy at Dumna Airport in Jabalpur collapsed on Thursday due to heavy rains. The incident occurred at around 11:30 am, causing damage to a parked car but resulting in no injuries. The canopy was installed to enhance the appearance of the "drop and go" area. During the heavy rainfall, water accumulated on the canopy, which eventually gave way under the weight.
The falling water and debris crushed a car belonging to an Income Tax official. The official was inside the terminal at the time, and no one was hurt in the incident. Airport director Rajeev Ratna Pandey said, “The fabric canopy was intended to beautify the area. Water accumulated on it due to the rain. It ripped under the weight of the water and the water fell with great force on a car parked there.”
A probe has been ordered to investigate the incident, and strict measures will be taken to prevent such occurrences in the future, the Airport director further added.
The newly renovated terminal building of Dumna Airport was recently inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 10, 2024, at a cost of approximately Rs 450 crore. Despite the recent renovation, the structure could not withstand the first heavy rains of the season.
According to reports, the Income Tax official had arrived at the airport in the car, and the driver had gone inside to see off the official when the canopy collapsed, smashing the vehicle.
