Apple is reportedly gearing up to introduce an innovative method for battery replacement in its upcoming iPhone 16 series. This move aligns with new European Union regulations mandating that by 2025, smartphone batteries must be replaceable by users using simple tools. As per a report by The Information, the tech giant is exploring the use of electrically induced adhesive debonding technology to simplify the battery replacement process.
Currently, replacing an iPhone battery is a daunting task. The existing method requires users to remove adhesive strips using tweezers. If these strips break during the process, additional steps involving heat or solvents are needed to dislodge the adhesive. Once the old battery is finally removed, a tray and a specialised machine are required to securely install a new one. This complex process has made battery replacement a job best left to professionals, rather than the average consumer.
However, the new technology Apple is working on promises to change this. Leaked images suggest that the iPhone 16 Pro will feature a battery encased in metal, replacing the current black foil design. This metal casing is not just for show; it plays a crucial role in the new replacement process. By applying a low voltage of electricity, the battery can be quickly and efficiently dislodged from its housing, making the replacement far simpler and quicker.
Despite this advancement, consumers might still face the challenge of opening the iPhone itself. The device's sophisticated construction, involving adhesives and screws to ensure water resistance and screen stability, means that opening it will remain a delicate operation. Therefore, Apple is expected to continue recommending professional assistance for battery replacements to mitigate any potential risks.
This battery replacement technology is anticipated to make its debut in at least one model of the iPhone 16 later this year. There are also speculations that it could be rolled out across all versions of the iPhone 17 by next year. But, nothing is officially confirmed as of now. Hence, people are advised to take the details with a pinch of salt.
Interestingly, Apple might find a way to sidestep the EU's stringent requirements if its devices meet specific performance benchmarks. For instance, if a device maintains 83 percent of its battery capacity after 500 full charges and 80 percent after 1,000 charges, it could qualify for an exemption. While the iPhone 15 already meets the 1,000-charge criterion, earlier models fall short of the 500-charge requirement.
