Don’t utter any additional words before or after oath: Lok Sabha Speaker to MPs

As Members of Parliament across party lines shouted slogans after taking their oath as members of the 18th Lok Sabha last week, Speaker Om Birla on Monday requested all MPs not to utter any additional words before or after the oath as prescribed in the Third Schedule of the Constitution in the future.

Last week, the MPs shouted slogans, including “Jai Samvidhan”,“Jai Bhim”, and others, after completing their oaths. These, however, were not included in the record of the proceedings.

At the start of the day’s proceedings on Monday, Birla told the House that it was a matter of concern that MPs had deviated from the prescribed format of the oath.

“Taking the oath is a Constitutional duty of MPs. There is a sanctity and dignity of the oath in our Constitution. If MPs use any additional words or sentences before or after the oath, it lowers the dignity of our Constitution. It is my request to all MPs that we resolve to take the oath in the format in the Third Schedule of the Constitution,” he said.

He added that a Parliamentary committee will also be set up in this regard, which would include members from all major parties.
