35-40 foreign terrorists active in Jammu, security grids tightened: Sources
Security forces in Jammu and Kashmir have identified 35-40 foreign terrorists operating in Rajouri, Poonch, and Kathua sectors of the Jammu region, as per sources. These terrorists, primarily of Pakistani origin, are reportedly working in small teams with the assistance of local guides and support networks in an effort to revive terrorism in the region.
Top sources in the security establishment informed India Today TV that these terrorists are functioning in groups of 2-3 and are well-integrated with local support systems.
In response, the military and other security agencies are intensifying their intelligence operations and tightening the counter-terror grid to address infiltration attempts effectively, sources added.
Security forces are particularly focused on monitoring the international border in the area and fortifying the second tier of the counter-terrorist grid, sources said. Efforts are also being made to disrupt the local support networks aiding these terrorists.
The area's dense forests present a challenging environment, necessitating enhanced intelligence gathering and strategic operations.
The Indian Army has already deployed additional troops equipped with over 200 armoured protected vehicles, procured under emergency procedures, sources informed. These specialist vehicles are now a key component of counter-terrorist operations in the region.
Since June 9, Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed four terrorist attacks, including the targeting of a bus carrying pilgrims in Reasi. All these attacks have happened in Jammu, which highlights the shift in focus of terrorists from Kashmir.
For the past 2–3 years, terrorists have intermittently struck in Jammu, which has seen a surge in violence, particularly in 2023 with 43 terror attacks and 20 so far in 2024.
The Jammu region's vast and complex terrain has been exploited by Pakistan-based terror organisations to send armed terrorists across the International Border (IB) and LoC, occasionally using tunnels.
Experts have emphasised the importance of synergy between security forces to counter the growing threats.
