New Zealand’s white-ball captain, Kane Williamson, has provided a big update about his future in international cricket after the Kiwis last Group C match of the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. The star batter, who is one of the greatest all-format batters of all time, has left his T20I future in the air by not committing to playing in the 10th edition of the T20 World Cup, which will be hosted by India and Sri Lanka in 2026.
Star New Zealand pacer Trent Boult has already confirmed that the 2024 T20 World Cup was his last shortest format mega-event for the Black Caps, and there’s a high possibility that a few other New Zealand stars will follow suit.
“Oh, I don’t know. There’s a bit of time between now and then, so it’s about regrouping as a side. We’ve got red-ball cricket over the next year, basically, so it’s back into some other international formats, and we’ll see where things land,” Williamson said.

The 33-year-old right-handed batter, who led the Kiwis to the T20 World Cup final in 2021, opened up about New Zealand’s poor show in the T20 World Cup 2024 and said that his team was slow to adapt to the challenging conditions in the Caribbean, which made the difference.
“It took a long time to start, and then, in a matter of days, we were not in contention, which was frustrating. We played against a couple of very strong sides (Afghanistan and the West Indies), who are very well equipped in these conditions, and unfortunately, that was the difference in our first two games.”
New Zealand suffered a shocking defeat by 84 runs against Afghanistan in the first Group C match of the T20 World Cup and then went down by 13 runs against the West Indies. The two back-to-back defeats were enough to knock the Black Caps out of the race to qualify for the Super 8s.
