Seven new nuclear reactors to be added in India by 2029

Union Minister Jitendra Singh, after reviewing the 100-day Action Plan of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), said on Tuesday that the country’s nuclear power generation capacity will increase by 70 percent in the next five years, a PIB press release stated.He said that the current capacity of 7.48 gigawatts (GWe) will increase to 13.08 GWe by 2029. He said that this increase will be achieved by adding seven new reactors. Singh said that the development of radiation technology will lead to economic and societal benefit of common citizens and promote ease of living and promote research in basic, applied and translational sciences using subatomic particles. Singh said that the government is also promoting indigenous development of technology. “Indigenous technology development and promoting energy security should be our priority,” he said.He said that along with energy security, health and food security, radiopharmaceuticals and nuclear medicine, agriculture, and food preservation should also be focused. Speaking on the ease of doing research and scaling up activities, he said, “We are giving single-point approval to promote ease of science and promote ease of living for citizens by application of nuclear technology.
