MHA to engage with Meiteis, Kukis in Manipur to address ethnic divide: Amit Shah
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) will soon engage in discussions with both the Meitei and Kuki communities to address the ethnic divide in Manipur, announced Home Minister Amit Shah on June 17.
During a review of the security situation in the state, Shah highlighted the need for strict legal action against those responsible for the violence. He stated that the deployment of central forces will be increased and strategically positioned if necessary to restore peace and tranquility.
Shah also directed that measures be taken to prevent further incidents of violence in Manipur, which has been experiencing ethnic conflicts for over a year. He instructed the chief secretary to ensure proper health and education facilities for displaced people and their rehabilitation.
Reaffirming the Centre's commitment to the safety and security of all citizens in Manipur, Shah reviewed the conditions in relief camps, emphasising the need for adequate food, water, medicines, and other basic amenities.
The Home Minister highlighted the importance of a coordinated approach to resolve the ongoing ethnic conflict. The Centre continues to support the Manipur government in enhancing the state's security situation.
Ethnic violence erupted in Manipur on May 3, 2023, following a tribal solidarity march in the hill districts protesting the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe status. Since then, over 220 people from both Kuki and Meitei communities and security personnel have been killed in the continuing violence.
