Nawazuddin Siddiqui says his family ‘was never poor’, did ‘chowkidaari’ because he didn’t want to borrow money from parents
Nawazuddin Siddiqui is a rare Bollywood actor who often opens up in a candid way during his interviews. The actor, in one of his latest interactions, opened up about how people just assume that he comes from a financially difficult background, however, that's not the case. In fact, Nawaz said that his family was "never poor."
"Meri shakal soorat aisi thi, main gareeb toh nahi tha (My face is like that, but I was never poor)," Nawazuddin told Shubhankar Mishra in an interview.
When the interviewer prodded him as to why he worked as a watchman, Nawazuddin said, "That's because I would not take money from home. There was money at home always, thdoa bohot paisa tha (it was manageable)... but I didn't want to take money from my family because I was doing a job of my choice (acting) without even telling them. My parents were always ready to give me money, they'd say, 'kuch problem ho toh le le (if you have problems, take money from us). You aren't asking for any money and we don't even know what you are doing'."
In an earlier interview with indianexpress.com Nawaz said that he likes to work "small films" even if they pay lesser money. "I do ‘small films’ because I have come here to do that only. Yes, at times I also do big films, play small roles in them, woh paise ke liye karte hai (I do that for the money). Paise milte hai acchhe usmein, taaki hum humaari chhoti filmein bana sake (you get paid well so then you can do small films)," he said.
When asked how he maintains this balance, he had said, “I make sure I am balanced that way. Periodically I review the kind of films I am doing. If I have done one big film, budget wise, then I make sure I do a couple of small films. There is not very good money in small films, so one needs to balance it out. I have been doing this from the very beginning of my career.”
