TRAI to Airtel, Reliance Jio and Vodafone: Work on your apps and website

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has directed Reliance Jio, Airtel, Vodafone Idea and other telecom operators to enhance their mobile apps and web portals to make them more user-friendly for registration of spam call complaints and settings of preference. The directive comes amidst TRAI’s effort to mitigate the issue of Unsolicited Commercial Communication (UCC), commonly referred to as spam.

Here’s what TRAI said in its directive

In an official press release, the telecom regulatory authority said “The TRAI has mandated Access Providers to ensure that options for UCC complaint registration and preference management are easily accessible on Access Providers’ mobile applications and websites.”

“Also, essential details for the registration of complaints should be automatically populated, if users grant permission to access their call logs and other relevant data,” it added.

As per the release, TRAI has also implemented amendments to the Performance Monitoring Report formats (PMRs) to strengthen monitoring mechanisms for UCC. “In order to have more granular monitoring, all Access Providers will be required to submit PMRs on a monthly basis, as opposed to the previous quarterly reporting cycle,” TRAI said in its release.

TRAI’s ‘160’ number solution for bank fraud calls

Earlier, TRAI announced that all transactional and service voice calls from financial entities will have 160 as a prefix. Once implemented, the new number series will help in the easy identification of the calling entity and will prevent the duping of innocent citizens from the fraudsters.

In the first phase, the 160 mobile phone series has been allocated for all entities regulated by Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI), and Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA).

It will eventually be expanded to banks and other financial institutions including Government, Private and Global Banks, Members of Association of National Exchanges Members of India (ANMI) as well as all telecom service providers.
