iphone users, you may soon be able to change your phone's battery at home by yourself

Apple is developing a new technology that could make iPhone batteries easier to replace, according to a report from The Information. This move comes as the company prepares to comply with upcoming European Union regulations on electronic device repairability.

The new technology, called "electrically induced adhesive debonding," would allow batteries to be removed by applying a small electrical current, rather than using the current method of adhesive strips. This could significantly simplify the battery replacement process for repair technicians and potentially for users.

Currently, replacing an iPhone battery is a complex process that can take several hours and requires specialised tools. The new method would involve encasing the battery in metal instead of foil, allowing it to be dislodged from the phone's chassis with an electrical jolt.

The Information reports that Apple might introduce this technology in at least one iPhone 16 model later this year, with plans to expand it to all iPhone 17 models in 2025 if successful.

This development aligns with the European Union's new Batteries Regulation, which requires portable device batteries to be easily removable and replaceable by consumers or independent operators by 2027. The regulation aims to reduce electronic waste and promote sustainability.

While the new technology would make battery removal easier, users would still need to open the iPhone themselves, which remains a challenging process due to the device's sealed design.

Apple is reportedly not alone in facing this challenge. Other smartphone manufacturers will also need to adapt their designs to comply with the EU regulations.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously reported that the iPhone 16 Pro Max might feature a higher-density battery with a stainless steel case, which could be related to this new technology. Kuo suggested that this change could improve heat dissipation and prepare for the EU legislation.
