AB de Villiers writes four-word 'open letter' to South Africa ahead of T20 World Cup semifinal against Afghanistan
Former South Africa batsman AB de Villiers is optimistic about the Proteas who are two steps away from winning an elusive ICC trophy, something that has continued to remain a so-near-yet-so-far story for the team ever since the 1992 World Cup semifinal.
South Africa have had some strong squads over the years representing the country at ICC events, but they have always fallen short of reaching the final of an ODI or T20I World Cup.
It's down to last two matches once again for the South Africans in the ninth edition of the men's T20 World Cup, and they will take on surprise package Afghanistan in the first semifinal in Trinidad on Thursday (6 am IST).
Ahead of the do-or-die clash, De Villiers has urged the team to bring the Cup home.
In a couple of posts on microblogging social media platform 'X', De Villiers chose an innovative way to wish the team luck.
"OPEN LETTER TO THE PROTEAS," wrote De Villiers in his first post. A minute later he added the four-word letter in a reply to the same post: "Bring it home lads."
In this edition of the T20 World Cup, South Africa have demonstrated an ability to hold nerve in pressure situations to emerge victorious, something they have found difficult to do historically.
Among their nervous wins in this tournament have been a one-run triumph over Nepal, a victory by four runs against Bangladesh, and a three-wicket win against the West Indies.
