Delhi likely to see light rain today, heavy shower alert in Kerala
After battling days of deadly heatwave, Delhi is likely to receive light rainfall on Sunday, while red and orange alerts for showers were issued for several parts of Kerala, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
On Saturday, the national capital's maximum temperature was recorded a notch above normal at 39.4 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature had settled 0.6 notches above the season's average at 28.6 degrees Celsius.
On Friday, rain drenched several parts of Delhi, bringing relief from the intense heatwave that had been sweeping the city. In the 24 hours ended at 8:30 am on Saturday, the national capital recorded 4 mm of rainfall. The humidity fluctuated between 50 per cent and 62 per cent.
The weather office has predicted generally cloudy skies with light rain or drizzle on Sunday. The maximum and minimum temperatures will likely settle around 40 degrees and 30 degrees Celsius, respectively.
The IMD said the monsoon is likely to arrive in the national capital on June 30.
Meanwhile, in Kerala, the IMD issued a red alert for Malappuram and an orange alert for Kottayam Ernakulam, Idukki, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts on June 22 (Saturday). For Sunday, the Met Department sounded a red alert in Kozhikode, Wayanad and Kannur and an orange alert in Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram and Kasargod.
A red alert indicates heavy to extremely heavy rain of over 20 cm in 24 hours. An orange alert means very heavy rain of 11 cm to 20 cm, and a yellow alert means heavy rain between 6 cm and 11 cm.
The Southwest Monsoon, on the other hand, passed through Navsari (Gujarat), Jalgaon (Maharashtra), Mandla (Madhya Pradesh), Pendra Road (Chhattisgarh), Jharsuguda (Odisha), Balasore (Odisha), Haldia (West Bengal), Pakur (Jharkhand), Sahibganj (Jharkhand) and Raxaul (Bihar), the IMD said.
Conditions were favourable for further advance of the monsoon into some more parts of Gujarat, remaining parts of Maharashtra, some more parts of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar and some parts of East Uttar Pradesh during the next three to four days.
NOIDA OFFICIALS RECEIVE 18 MORE BODIES AMID HEATWAVE
The Gautam Buddh Nagar health department received 18 more bodies for postmortem on June 21 amid heatwave conditions, taking the number of autopsies carried out in four days to 93, officials said on Saturday.
The department has also started DNA sampling of unidentified bodies, they said.
"On June 21, we received 18 more bodies for postmortem. Out of these, six bodies are unidentified," Chief Medical Officer Dr Suneel Kumar Sharma said.
"Now, we have started one more thing. We are taking DNA samples of unidentified bodies and will hand them over to police whenever required. With this, these bodies can be disposed timely and the pile up at the mortuary can be reduced," he added.
On Friday, Sharma said the health department received at least 75 bodies for autopsy from June 18 to 20 but could not be directly linked to those to heatwave deaths.
