Notably, this system was introduced during the second debate of the 2020 elections after Trump and Biden went at each other in the first, leading to what some described as complete chaos.

The debate, which will start at 9 p.m. EDT at the CNN headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, will see two former presidents pitted against each other for the first time in the history of presidential debates. According to some analysts, the mike cut-off feature will benefit Trump more than Biden.

Kristen Welker, who was one of the moderators of the 2020 presidential debates, wrote in an NBC article that Trump's inner circle has advised him to let Biden speak as much as possible. They expect that the president, who has often spoken gibberish or been involved in gaffes, will run himself into trouble without Trump having anything to do about it.
