Queen’s LIVE: Tennis scores with Andy Murray in deciding set after Carlos Alcaraz win

Andy Murray begins what it is likely his final appearance at Queen’s Club today when he takes on Australia’s Alexei Popyrin in the first round.

Murray, 37, is expected to bring his tennis career to an end this year after struggling to maintain his high standards in recent months, but the Scot is still bidding to win a record-extending seventh Queen’s title this week, after clinching five singles crowns and one in the doubles.

Murray was disappointed to exit the Stuttgart Open at the first hurdle last week, where fellow Briton Jack Draper collected the trophy. Draper is in action against Argentina’s Mariano Navone, while the reigning men’s singles champion at Queen’s, Carlos Alcaraz, also begins his campaign as he takes on another Argentine, Francisco Cerundolo.

Alcaraz said on court: “I mean the first match in every tournament is never easy, but even more so here on grass starting the grass season. You have to deal with expectations you put on yourself.

“A really good test to play against Francisco, it was good to have those situations in the second set and having to fight to stay alive but I am really happy with everything I’ve done and good to keep going.”

Learning on grass: “It doesn’t matter the tournament I’m playing or everything that I have achieved so far, I have to just keep learning, I didn’t play at the same at the same level as the final last year, I have to get better each time I step on the grass court.

“I feel like I am still learning here.”

Alcaraz now has the chance to serve for the set, Cerundolo was in the same position a few games ago and let it slide.

But there are no similar signs from Alcaraz who takes an easy 40-0 lead to set up three match points, and wins at the first opportunity with a powerful serve that crashes off the frame of Cerundolo’s racket.

Cerundolo has challenged a call at 15-15, he doesn’t look happy, but Alcaraz has gone ahead at 15-30.

A double fault gives the Spaniard two break points, and he takes the game with another unforced error from Cerundolo who hits a backhand into the net.

Cerundolo just looked a little bit nervous in the last game, almost like he was trying to play Alcaraz and not the ball in front of him, and it has come at a cost.

Alcaraz takes the first point of his service game, and should he win it’s all level in the second. Alcaraz double faults at 30-30 but he challenges the call, the ball was just out.

Cerundolo has a break and set point, but he can’t take it when his return bounced off the net and out, and the game will go to deuce.

Cerundolo has another one when Alcaraz’s attempt at a daring drop shot just slid down the net, but it’s recovered with an ace.

The Argentinian hits a stunning backhand down the line to set up another set point, and the crowd enjoyed that one too! It was 84mph.

Alcaraz saves another set point, and then takes the advantage when Cerundolo’s serve-return goes straight into the net, and he does take the game at the next opportunity!

Alcaraz took the first point, but it was all level at 15-all. Alcaraz comes to the net, there’s a flurry of exchanges, but he read the response after a poor approach shot, before he eventually capitalises with a well-timed volley.

The Spaniard follows it up with a drop shot that just bounced over the net, and was far out of Cerundolo’s reach, before taking the game with his next serve.

Alcaraz had played some impressive shots including a forehand down the line but Cerundolo has just kept defending and it’s the Spaniard who makes the mistakes at 40-15.

There’s a fist pump and a grunt of celebration as Alcaraz takes a 40-0 lead, but Cerundolo fights back with an open forehand winner. His forehand has been the massive improvement between the first and the second sets.

Alcaraz might have been made to run from one side of the court to the other but he has won the exhausting point.

Whatever he was looking like in the first three games of the second set seems to have completely disappears as Alcaraz goes 0-30 ahead on the Cerundolo serve.

But the Argentinian has fought his way back, winning four successive points to secure the hold.

Alcaraz has found his feet this set, and storms ahead to 40-0, before taking the game with a sliced backhand to set up the net approach and then hitting an easy volley to win the game.

Cerundolo has looked a completely different player this set, he goes easily 40-0 up on his serve, and he takes the game with an impressively timed lob despite being off balance. The ball just drops over Alcaraz’s head, and he is now on the back foot in the second set.

Alcaraz has kept showing all his variations, including an impressive whip and dip on a forehand to prevent it from bouncing up and being in Cerundolo’s hitting range.

But the Argentinian wins a point back, with Alcaraz running all over the court, and it’s 30-30 after an overhead smash.

Cerundolo has his first break point as Alcaraz hits the ball into the net, but he does manage to break!

It’s Cerundolo’s serve at the start of the second set, can he settle down into this game a bit more and try and disrupt Alcaraz’s momentum?

He looks to have changed tactics and started favouring the longer rallies rather than the shorter exchanges that took place for most of the first set.

Cerundolo has two chances to hold at the start of this set, but misses the first with an overhit forehand. There’s some controversy here and the players have been ordered to replay the point due to a correction from the lead umpire. And he makes the most of it, holding to 30.

Alcaraz’s turn, this time serving for the set, and he goes 30-0 up with a cleverly-set up overhead smash from right at the net. There was no chance of him missing out on that one!

But he does miss the next one, Alcaraz gets caught coming into the net and tries a sliced volley, but drags the ball wide.

Alcaraz stays patient and shows off his variations to carve out two set points, and he takes the first set with ease.

Cerundolo finds himself serving to stay in the first set after what feels like hardly any time at all, and he quickly takes a 30-0 lead.

But Alcaraz’s backhand is just too strong and he manages to win back a point, and goes level the next chance when Cerundolo hits a drop shot into the tramlines.

Alcaraz takes the game to deuce, with another mistakes from Cerundolo, and then sets up his first set point with a stunning forehand down the line.

Cerundolo saves the first set point with a clever serve right on the line that Alcaraz cannot return, and then the Spaniard misses a drop shot, allowing his opponent a chance to win his first game in this match, which he does do to applause from the crowd.

Cerundolo takes the first point on Alcaraz’s serve, but it’s level almost immediately, and Alcaraz moves ahead at 30-15 when his opponent fires a backhand too wide and into the tramlines.

Another mistake from Cerundolo, this time a backhand into the net, and Alcaraz goes ahead 40-15, and takes the game the next chance.

Alcaraz might just have got out of second gear, he returns a 92mph serve with a winner down the line to set up three break points.

He misses the first going for a big heavy forehand which goes straight into the net, but he takes the game to 15.

Alcaraz has not even broken a sweat in this match so far, and it doesn’t look like he is under pressure in this game either, taking a comfortable 30-0 lead.

The Argentinian saves the first break point, and the second with a good wide serve to take the game to deuce, but he cannot prevent Alcaraz taking the game.

Lorenzo Musetti claims big win over Alex de Minaur

Musetti said on the court after the win: “I mean, terrible start, the thing that I said it could be that my game could be better and at the end I think I served better. At the beginning, I couldn’t find the rhythm on the serve and I started to play with more confidence, and beating Alex on grass is one of the toughest challenges of this season and I am really happy to be in the second round at Queens.”

He added: “I am trying to get the confidence I need to play my real tennis at my real level. Today I knew it would be really difficult but I knew I could do it and at the end I was playing really well so I am really proud of this win.”

After just over two hours on court, Musetti does win the game, he bows his head and roars in celebration as the number two seed, who reached the final at the competition last year has been knocked out.

Musetti has overturned a deficit after losing the first set and finding himself behind in the second to come back and take the third 6-2.

Holger Rune among first-round victims on ‘terrible’ court

Meanwhile, seventh-seeded Holger Rune branded the court “terrible” after he kept slipping on the damp grass as he tumbled to a three-set defeat to Jordan Thompson of Australia. Thompson won 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3.

Frances Tiafoe retired after a nasty fall while trailing Australian qualifier Rinky Hijikata 7-5, 4-6, 1-0.

Third-seeded Grigor Dimitrov, the 2014 champion from Bulgaria, eased past Adrian Mannarino of France 6-1, 6-2.

Yesterday: Milos Raonic sets ace record in tense win over Cameron Norris

Milos Raonic sent down a record 47 aces and saved two match points while beating Cameron Norrie in the first round at Queen’s Club on Monday.

Raonic’s 47 was an ATP record for a three-set match since the statistic was kept from 1991. The previous record was 45 aces in 2015 by Ivo Karlovic against Tomas Berdych in Halle. Raonic’s previous best was 38 in 2011.

“My serve has always been the most important shot to me,” Raonic said. “This small record, it’s something special, something meaningful. A fun stat to be proud of.”

Former runner-up Norrie was beaten 6-7 (6), 6-3, 7-6 (9) after holding match points in the last tiebreak.

Former world No. 3 Raonic has slipped to 186th in the rankings after three years of injury problems but the Canadian still possesses one of the game’s potent serves. He wasn’t broken.

Norrie had to endure a set of 225 kph (140 mph) missiles whizzing past him before pouncing in the tiebreak, saving a set point before edging ahead. When Raonic immediately broke the Norrie serve, the second set was decided.

In the third-set tiebreak, Norrie couldn’t convert two match points and Raonic put one away with a forehand winner.

This Thursday, a new documentary about Andy Murray is released on BBC iPlayer. It isn’t the first, but it may well be the last.

Five years on from Andy Murray: Resurfacing, which charted his near-miraculous return from hip surgery, Andy Murray: Will to Win encompasses the 20-year professional journey of Britain’s greatest tennis player in the open era with behind-the-scenes archival footage, starting out with his breathless fitness regime as a junior in Barcelona and concluding with some of his greatest memories at Wimbledon, not least his two championships in 2013 and 2016. It puts into pictures a remarkable journey of unmatchable highs and devastating lows. A journey, however, which seems to be in its final weeks now.

Murray confirmed in press duties ahead of this week’s cinch Championships at Queen’s Club in west London that he is set to retire either after Wimbledon next month or the Paris Olympics in August. Asked if he would make the US Open or Davis Cup at the end of the tennis summer, he said: “I don’t think so.”
