Escape to the Country guest breaks down in tears as frantic host forced to step in

One Escape to the Country guest was left in tears as she was presented with one property on the BBC programme.

Heading to the village of Coddington in Nottinghamshire, close to Newark-on-Trent, househunter Susan was searching for a new place to call home. Expert Jules Hudson was keen to show off what was happening in the village, including community coffee mornings and a Women’s Institute.

But when it came to the property – a detached cottage dating back to 1840 – Susan was truly overwhelmed. Her best friend Lesley was even treated to a guest wing attached to the property, as she commented: “I’m bowled over. I’m knocked for six. I can’t speak!”

The house boasted en-suite bathrooms, a reading room and stunning fireplaces. Susan branded the kitchen “fabulous”, gushing: “You’ve given me everything I asked for.”

Jules helped the guests explore the “elegant” property, and Susan had to take a deep breath before entering the family bathroom she said was “big enough to dance in”. She added: “I’m choking up.”

Jules agreed: “It’s all got a bit emotional, hasn’t it? You were excited by the bathroom. Here we are in what would be your master bedroom.” Susan had to cover her mouth with one hand as she said: “You’ve just found such a wonderful house. I am going to cry.”

The expert had to quickly step in to reassure her: “It’s okay! It’s okay, you don’t have to…” The pair managed to giggle through the tears as Susan confessed: “I pull some funny faces when I cry!”

Slightly frantic, Jules said: “Let’s go downstairs. We’ll gather our breath… and talk about the money.” Out in the huge garden with its double garages, Jules finally revealed just how much the cottage cost. Susan guessed at £340,000 for the property – but was left ecstatic as Jules revealed it was on the market for £330,000.

“You are joking!” she exclaimed. It was “bang on” budget, and Susan clearly couldn’t cope with the news as she began crying once again.

“Have a good old sob,” Jules told her. She was clearly torn, admitting: “I like the other one too!” and he warned her: “You can only buy one!”

Lesley said: “What I was afraid would happen has happened, Susan has fallen in love with the house without thinking about the more practical aspects of it all. So we’ll have to have a little chat later.”

But clearly torn between two perfect homes, Susan couldn’t quite decide which was the winner.
