UK heatwave warning issued for one group of people as mercury hits 31C

Brits are set to sizzle in 31C temperatures today sparking health warnings for the elderly who are at greater risk of heat-related illnesses.

The country basked in the hottest day of the year on Monday with Wisley, Surrey hitting a sweltering 28.3C, but the mercury is expected to climb even higher, particularly in central and eastern England come Wednesday, according to Met Office predictions.

With most of England under yellow heat health alerts from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), the nation is urged to stay vigilant until Thursday when the heat is anticipated to subside back to normal seasonal levels.

Met Office's Andrea Bishop commented on the impending heat, noting that while it will remain "very warm" across much of the UK, western and South West regions will experience "nearer average temperatures".

Temperatures are soaring this week

"Wednesday is a very warm day for many and we're going to have top temperatures of 31C," she highlighted, adding that a shift to cooler conditions is on the horizon for Thursday as a band of cloud and rain moves southeastward across the nation.

Despite the expected cooling, areas including the east or southeast of England could still face intense warmth ahead of this change. The main dangers during such scorching conditions include heat exhaustion, heatstroke, and dehydration, posing significant health threats during heatwaves.

NHS experts are flagging up crucial advice for the most vulnerable amidst scorching temperatures, emphasising that individuals over 75, women, those with long-standing health conditions, and kids are at elevated risk from the heat. Meanwhile, Age UK is advising the elderly to avoid venturing out during the peak heat times between 11am and 3pm and to maintain a cool indoor environment by drawing the blinds and keeping windows shut.

Bupa's Dr Luke Powles underlined the essential know-how regarding heat exhaustion symptoms, which span from "a throbbing headache, dizziness, confusion, cramping and nausea" to the more extreme and dangerous signs of heatstroke.

He detailed the telltale signs of this condition: a conspicuous lack of sweating despite the heat, exceptionally high temperature readings, rapid breathing, bafflement, fainting spells, or unresponsiveness. With a stern warning, he noted, "Heatstroke is very serious and should be treated as an emergency."

Beachgoers are being advised to apply a minimum of SPF 30 sunscreen to avoid sunburn, which can heighten the risk of skin cancer, even on overcast days. Elderly individuals are more prone to heat-related health problems as their bodies struggle to adapt to soaring temperatures.

During the scorching heatwaves of summer 2022, there were over 2,800 additional deaths recorded among those aged 65 and above. Rob Martin, managing director of care services at Anchor, stated that the charity is encouraging "the wider community to keep a close eye on older neighbours and their older relatives who may live alone and are more vulnerable in the heat."

"We recommend older people stay hydrated and keep out of the sunlight as much as possible," he added. "In these temperatures, it's important to avoid caffeinated drinks as they are dehydrating. Drink plenty of cold fluids like water and fruit juices. We recommend taking regular sips of hydrating drinks throughout the day."

Pets, particularly dogs left unattended in warm cars or taken for walks on hot days, are also at risk of heatstroke. The RSPCA advises ensuring pets have access to shade and fresh drinking water to help them stay cool. London experienced a high of 27.4C at St James's Park on Monday, while temperatures climbed to 26.9C in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, and 25C in Northern Ireland.

However, the balmy conditions are set to be a brief affair with heavy showers, thunderstorms, and relentless rain likely to hit the west as the week progresses, signaling a return to more typical British autumnal weather. Ms Bishop went on to say that we can expect "more average temperatures and pressure conditions everywhere" starting from Friday.
