Miami Dolphins waive wide receiver to make room for defensive lineman

The Miami Dolphins recently made a huge addition to their defense with the signing of veteran defensive lineman Calais Campbell in NFL free agency, but before they could officially do that, they had to make a roster move to clear room.

And the Dolphins did just that on Tuesday morning, with the team announcing it has waived wide receiver Mathew Sexton. Miami also made the Campbell signing official.

Sexton, who originally entered the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2021, signed with the Dolphins earlier this offseason. Despite multiple years in the league, Sexton has never played a snap in a game.

In all, Sexton has spent time with the Kansas City Chiefs, New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons, while also playing in the XFL with the Vegas Vipers.

In Campbell, the Dolphins are getting a proven commodity on their defense. Granted, Campbell is long in the tooth but he has still been productive in recent years, with the 37-year-old tallying 12 sacks the last two seasons, including 6.5 in 2023.

Campbell is just the latest offseason addition the Dolphins have made to their defense, a list that includes linebacker Jordyn Brooks, safety Jordan Poyer, edge rusher Shaq Barrett and cornerback Kendall Fuller.
