Mortal Kombat 1 Gives Brief Look at Takeda and Teases Future Content

  • Ed Boon offers a very brief tease at how Takeda will play in Mortal Kombat 1, bringing back some classic moves.
  • Boon's tweet also specifically asks for community feedback and hints that Kombat Pack 1 is only just the beginning of continued MK1 support.
  • Alongside the Kameo fighter Ferra, Takeda launches on July 23 for Mortal Kombat 1.

Ed Boon reveals a new teaser trailer for the final Mortal Kombat 1 DLC character, Takeda, while also hinting at the future of the game. Once the calendar flips to July, Mortal Kombat 1 will be seeing the final Kombat Pack 1 character and Kameo fighter arriving in the game, leaving many fans with what else could be on the horizon for the popular fighting game. It's likely that Netherrealm Studios has a special anniversary event planned, but the studio hasn't commented on any major future content outside of Kombat Pack 1.

Following the release of Homelander, Netherrealm revealed a bit of disappointing news for fans as the scheduled launch of the final kameo fighter Ferra was delayed. Instead, Mortal Kombat 1 players are getting Ferra and Takeda together on July 23, which also marks the end of the announced Kombat Pack 1 content. As a returning fighter from Mortal Kombat X, Takeda already has a fairly big fanbase thanks to his links to Scorpion's Shirai Ryu clan and his faster style of gameplay which utilizes kunai, a bladed whip, and plasma swords. As the last announced Kombat Pack 1 fighter, fans have been eager to see how Takeda will translate into Mortal Kombat 1.

Mortal Kombat 1 Releases New Update

NetherRealm Studios releases a new update for Mortal Kombat 1 featuring balance adjustments and changes to main roster and Kameo fighters.

While Netherrealm has commonly teased fans with a very brief trailer of upcoming DLC fighters, typically with two characters conversing from the character select screen, Ed Boon gave fans more than that by also revealing a short glimpse at Takeda's actual gameplay as well. The trailer shows Takeda and Scorpion facing off, before transitioning to match footage. The short clip confirms the return of Takeda's kunai and bladed whip, while the character's trademark agility can be seen through his air attacks and flips around the stage. It's not clear if some classic MKX moves are coming back, as the clip didn't show Takeda's plasma swords.

What's Next For Mortal Kombat 1?

In addition to the surprising Takeda gameplay reveal, Ed Boon also reiterated Netherrealm Studio's desire to continue supporting Mortal Kombat 1 beyond Kombat Pack 1. The biggest tease in his Tweet was his use to the phrase "so far" after indicating Takeda and Ferra were the final characters to be added to the game. While Boon is looking for feedback from the community through specific gameplay-related questions, it wouldn't be surprising to see another Kombat Pack eventually announced considering the track record that Netherrealm has with DLC in previous games like Mortal Kombat 11, which not only got 2 Kombat Packs but a major expansion with new characters and story content called Aftermath.

In fact, another Kombat Pack seems to be likely if rumors are any indication. Recently, a dataminer shared details on what could be the next six DLC fighters coming to Mortal Kombat 1, one of which being Ghostface, a heavily rumored guest character from the Scream movie franchise. Alongside franchise mainstays like the robots Cyrax and Sektor as well as a potential return for Noob Saibot, the datamined information also included some surprising guest characters like Conan the Barbarian and the T-1000 from Terminator 2. Regardless, nothing has been officially confirmed, so fans will want to take all of this with a grain of salt for now.
