Kerry FC on the look-out for ‘two or three’ new players in the transfer window
Kerry FC assistant manager James Sugrue has said the club are on the look-out for potentially ‘two or three’ new players during the transfer window, which swung open on Monday (July 1).
While the Tralee native said that he had nothing concrete to confirm as regards signings, he hinted at a desire to freshen up the squad if the right players come available.
“No news at all when it comes to transfers at the moment, not a thing,” Sugrue said at his pre-Finn Harps press briefing on Monday afternoon.
"For me, I think, and Conor [McCarthy, first team manager], we’ve talked about it, we’d be looking for two maybe three, just in a couple of positions that’s all, but I’m hoping watching the way the Under 20s have been playing a couple of them [could come into contention].
“There was one [player] on the Under 17s as well that we want to bring in, so hopefully they come in and light the place up a bit and that could happen as well, under different coaches and that they might come on even more.”
While it was very much the clubs modus operandi to shop local and promote from within, the Tralee native says the club is open to bringing in some outside experience if it fits the bill and can complement a settled squad.
“It would [be settled], but you’re always looking to freshen things up,” he continued.
"Obviously if you can get one or two bodies in who have experience and bring something to the group obviously you’d bring them in, but I told ye this maybe a month ago and I keep going on about Cian Brosnan and look at the difference he’s made.
"I told ye he was hungry at training and raring to play, and he came on the last day and changed the whole game.
"These are boys who are hungry to play, and we have cover in every position so I’m happy enough, but if I feel with the couple of fellas who do come in and I see something that they have and can bring something to the group, we’ll obviously talk to them then.”
Speculation will continue about a potential return to Mounthawk Park on loan of last year’s Kerry FC captain Leo Gaxha who saw less than ten minutes of action across June with new club Galway United.
He wasn’t in the squad for Galway’s two-nil defeat to Shelbourne Rovers last weekend and, with Steven Healy having left the squad in June, could provide a real jolt of additional quality to a side that's motoring nicely at present.
The club also confirmed on Monday that Ferdia O’Brien and Evison Rramani have departed the club, joining Steven Healy in the departures lounge since the beginning of the season.
Sugure, meanwhile, confirmed that Antonio Tuta is back in the Kingdom and returned to training on Monday evening.
