Wexford Over-35 soccer reaches quarter-final stage
THE FINAL round of Over-35 soccer group games took place on Friday.
In Group A, Corach missed the chance to secure top spot and a home quarter-final as a Niall Harney missed penalty in stoppage time saw them draw 0-0 with Shelburne, who claimed the coveted first place.
In the group’s other game, Campile beat Cloughbawn 3-0 to finish third and secure their home quarter-final in the League Trophy competition.
In Group B, Rosslare maintained their one hundred per cent record as a brilliant goal from the in-form Derek Boyce secured a hard-earned win against Ballymurn who, despite the defeat, finished second.
In the group’s other game, Kilmore came out on top in an eight-goal thriller after a flurry of goals and end-to-end action, beating Fastnet 5-3.
Stuuy Lawlor and Danny O’Reilly with a brace each and Darren Naughton were on the scoresheet for the winners, while Richie Walsh hit a hat-trick for Fastnet.
In Group C, it was Forth Celtic who secured top spot after a hard-earned win over Crossabeg, with Paul ‘Patsy’ Malone getting the only goal of the game.
Enniscorthy finished the group in second place after they defeated Taghmon 3-0 in Horetown. Willie Dobbs, Emmett Quirke and James Carty were on the scoresheet.
In Group D, it was the impressive Courtown who finished on top and unbeaten, picking up four wins and two draws.
And in their last game on Friday, they ran out 4-1 winners against St. Joseph’s who finished second.
Eugene O’Brien with two, Mick Kinsella and Wes Fitzpatrick were on the scoresheet, while Seán ‘Yoko’ Keane replied for the Joey’s.
In the group’s other game, Arklow missed the chance to finish second as they went down to the ever-improving Gorey Celtic on a 3-2 scoreline.
Jimmy O’Rourke (two) and John Joe McCarthy were on the scoresheet for Celtic, while Mark Nolan and Cormac Hyland replied for Arklow.
This weekend sees the start of our knockout fixtures, and it’s Cup and Shield quarter-final action.
Cup quarter-finals: Corach v. Rosslare Rangers; Cloughbawn v. Shelburne; Crossabeg v. Taghmon; Enniscorthy v. Fastnet.
Shield quarter-finals: Courtown v. Campile; Kilmore v. Ballymurn; St. Joseph’s v. Arklow; Gorey Celtic v. Forth Celtic.
All games are on Friday, July 5, at 7.30 p.m. with extra-time and penalties if required.
