We found the best way to see all the sights of Hull city centre

This week, I went on Hull’s open top bus tour and learnt about the city’s history while enjoying the sunny weather on the top deck.

The open top bus tours run throughout summer, offering residents a different kind of day out that is perfect for the hot weather. At present, the bus tours run Saturday to Wednesday, between 9.45am and 4.45pm, collecting passengers from outside the cenotaph every 45 minutes past the hour.

Keen to enjoy a dose of local history, provided by the knowledgeable David Curry, I boarded the bus and headed straight for the top deck. With the sun shining down on a glorious day in Hull, I couldn’t wait to set off.

When the bus departed, we were taken from the cenotaph and down towards Hull City Hall and the Ferens Art Gallery for our first bit of cultural education. While the bus was not particularly busy, I could tell that it did not dampen David’s enthusiasm and he was quick to reel off some informative facts about the two institutions.

From there, we cruised through Queen Victoria Square and I was already thoroughly enjoying myself. Seeing Hull from a whole new perspective on the top deck with the wind blowing against my face was the perfect tonic to the hot weather.

We then passed alongside Queen’s Gardens and learnt about its history as the Queen’s Dock, before turning into Old Town and taking in the brilliant sights of Hull Minster. After looping around and enjoying some elevated views of Hull’s oldest streets, we headed down towards Humber Street.

Once we arrived at the Marina, we paused for a moment and David gave us another lesson on Hull’s maritime history. At this point in the journey, I began to regret not wearing any sun cream as it is an absolute sun trap up on that top deck – future tour-goers, you have been warned!

Heading back into town via The Deep, the bus took us to Hull New Theatre, where David recounted some of the famous writers and performers to have emerged from the city. Every stop was full of useful information and well worth the price of admission for those who have an interest in all things Hull.

Swinging back through town and onto Ferensway, the tour concluded and I took my leave, thanking David for a wonderful trip. Not only did I learn a lot about Hull’s history, I also got to spend an hour soaking up the sun while cruising around my favourite city.

The open top bus tours will continue to run throughout the summer, costing £8.50 for an all-day adult ticket that allows you to hop on and hop off at your leisure. If you’re a fan of local history and don’t mind a bit of sun, this could be the perfect day out for you this summer!
