West Indies have suffered a severe jolt as Brandon King has been ruled out of the T20 World Cup. King suffered a side strain during the T20 World Cup Super 8s defeat against England.
Kyle Mayers has replaced the injured king as ICC approved the left handed batter’s addition to the West Indies squad. The Lucknow Super Giants batter is likely to join the squad on Saturday.
Myers looked in great touch against England as he reached 23 runs in just two overs. He also smashed Reece Topley a gigantic six but had his fat sealed in the 13th ball. He came down the pitch in a bid to hit Sam Curran through the covers and went one step further before collapsing on the ground.
He required medical attention on the field and later had to leave as he was forced to retire hurt. Shimron Hetmyer replaced him on the pitch in the second innings as he was unable to field. West Indies went on to lose the match against England.
ICC issued a statement confirming Mayers’ addition. “The Event Technical Committee of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 has approved left-handed batter Kyle Mayers as a replacement for Brandon King in the West Indies squad.
“Mayers, who has played 37 T20Is, was named as a replacement after King was ruled out due to a side strain. Mayers is expected to join the squad on Saturday.
“The replacement of a player requires the approval of the Event Technical Committee before the player can be officially added to the squad.”
King has been West Indies’ leading run scorer in the shortest format since last year and also took over as the stand-in captain in South Africa last month. West Indies named five players as reserves apart from Mayers, Andre Fletcher, Fabian Allen, Hayden Walsh Jr. and Matthew Forde are also available at their disposal.
In 11 T20Is, Mayers amassed 367 runs at a strike rate of over 150. West Indies’ defeats against England derailed their plans and they will have to grab wins against the USA and South Africa in order to secure a place in the T20 World Cup semifinal.
