Megha Engineering bags Rs 12,800 crore NPCIL project in Karnataka

HYDERABAD: Marking its foray into the nuclear energy space, Megha Engineering & Infrastructure Ltd (MEIL) has bagged a Rs 12,800 crore engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract from the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL).

The tender, which is the highest ever in value called by NPCIL, is for the construction of 2 x 700 MW electrical reactors at Kaiga in Karnataka under the department of atomic energy.

Hyderabad-based MEIL outbid other heavyweight bidders such as BHEL and L&T to emerge as the lowest bidder for the project, which is being viewed as a significant milestone in India's journey towards clean and reliable nuclear energy.

"This contract represents the most significant project for MEIL and our strategic entry into the nuclear energy sector," said MEIL director Ch Subbaiah.

"MEIL's unwavering commitment to excellence and innovation has been recognised through this landmark achievement. The company is excited to contribute to India's self-reliance in clean energy solutions," Subbaiah said.

The tendering process for the project began in May 2023, with the technical bid opening in October 2023. It followed the quality-cum-cost-based selection (QCBS) methodology. MEIL said this rigorous process ensured a meticulous evaluation of technical expertise and cost-effectiveness for all proposals.
