Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to celebrate International Day of Yoga on the banks of Dal Lake in Srinagar on Friday.
A multi-layer security blanket has been planned for Srinagar during the PM's visit. The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Tuesday declared Srinagar a ‘temporary red zone’, banning any operation of drones and quadcopters in the city.
“This year's International Day of Yoga will be celebrated in Srinagar on its scheduled date of June 21, 2024,” Union Ayush Minister Prataprao Jadhav said at a press conference, in which he also announced that Modi would be part of the celebrations.
Sources said the 10th International Day of Yoga will be celebrated at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) on the banks of Dal Lake on Friday morning. The PM will arrive in Srinagar on Thursday evening, the sources said.
According to officials, a large gathering of yoga enthusiasts and sportspersons is expected to attend the function.

The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Tuesday declared Srinagar a ‘temporary red zone’, banning any operation of drones and quadcopters in the city.
Sources say that while the sanitisation operation at the SKICC was launched over a week ago, the information about the PM’s visit was kept under wraps. They said the background security check of all officials of the convention centre, those on duty, and the sportspersons who will attend has already been conducted by the J&K Police's Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
“Srinagar city has been declared as 'Temporary Red Zone' for the operation of drones and quadcopters as per provisions of rule 24(2) of Drone Rules, 2021 with immediate effect,” the J&K Police said in a post on X. “All unauthorised drone operations in the Red Zone are liable to be penalised as per relevant provisions of Drone Rules 2021. As responsible citizens, your cooperation is solicited in this regard,” the post said.
The PM’s visit to Srinagar will be his second to the Valley this year. In February, he visited Srinagar and addressed a rally.
Last year, PM Modi celebrated International Day of Yoga at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
