Sri Lanka head coach Chris Silverwood has resigned from his position after the team failed to qualify for even the Super 8 stage of the 2024 T20 World Cup. The former England pacer had been appointed to the role in April 2022 and oversaw the Sri Lanka Men's cricket team in multiple crucial tournaments and series.

Under Silverwood's tenure, Sri Lanka secured crucial victories including the 2022 Asia Cup, the home ODI series against Australia and the away Test series against Bangladesh. They reached the finals of Asia Cup 2023 as well, but since then, it has been a disappointing outing for the Lankans in international cricket.

Sri Lanka could not make it to the knockouts of recent ICC tournaments, including the two most recent ICC Men's T20 World Cups in 2022 and 2024 and the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup in 2023 while Silverwood was coach.

“Being an international coach means long periods away from loved ones. After lengthy conversations with my family and with a heavy heart, I feel it is now time for me to return home and spend some quality time together,” Silverwood said in his parting statement.

“I would like to thank the players, coaches, backroom staff, and management of the SLC for their support during my time in Sri Lanka. Without your support, none of the success would have been possible," Silverwood added.

The former England pacer's resignation is the second high-profile exit from Sri Lanka management after former cricketer Mahela Jayawardena's departure from the post of 'Consultant Coach' on Wednesday.

Sri Lanka crashed out of the T20 World Cup in the group stages itself with two defeats, a no result and a solitary victory over the Netherlands and it was the former champions’ worst performance in the T20 World Cup.

The cricket board has already begun the process of finding a new head coach ahead of Sri Lanka's next international outing against India in a white-ball series in July.
