Andhra Pradesh R&B Minister pledges war-footing repairs for over 9,000 km of deteriorated roads

In a bid to tackle the deteriorating condition of roadways across Andhra Pradesh, Roads and Buildings (R&B) Minister B C Janardhan Reddy unveiled plans to initiate extensive repairs on over 9,000 kilometers of roads in the state.
Addressing reporters at the secretariat, Minister Reddy expressed concern over the dire condition of Andhra Pradesh’s road infrastructure, emphasizing that immediate action is necessary. He highlighted the urgent need to eliminate potholes and restore road safety.

Repair Plans on a War Footing
“My immediate goal is to repair all affected roadways on a war footing and ensure they are pothole-free,” stated Minister Reddy. He disclosed proposals to refurbish 8,161 kilometers of district roads and 3,340 kilometers of state highways, aiming for comprehensive improvements.
Budget and Expenditure
Minister Reddy revealed that despite a budget allocation of Rs 19,428 crore for the R&B Department between 2019 and 2024, only Rs 9,015 crore, approximately 46%, has been utilized. He highlighted concerns over unpaid bills amounting to Rs 2,261 crore, which has deterred contractors from undertaking projects.
Scope of Road Network
Andhra Pradesh boasts a vast road network, comprising 8,164 kilometers of national highways, 12,653 kilometers of state highways, 27,062 kilometers of main district roadways, and 5,663 kilometers of village roadways, totaling 53,542 kilometers. Of these, 45,378 kilometers fall under the state government’s jurisdiction.
Minister Reddy criticized the previous YSRCP government for allegedly failing to allocate adequate funds for road maintenance, necessitating urgent repairs for 22,007 kilometers of roadways.
