It is a 2023 spy comedy film directed by Anushree Mehta and produced by Abir Sengupta, Anushree Mehta, Varun Bajaj, Ishan Saksena and Sunil Shah. The film stars Radhika Apte, Sumeet Vyas and Rajesh Sharma in the lead roles. The film premiered on April 14, 2023, and opened to mixed reviews from critics.
Mrs Undercover is the story of Durga (Radhika Apte), a housewife living in Kolkata who was trained to be an undercover agent 12 years ago but was forgotten by the intelligence agencies due to systemic ineptitude and apathy. Now very domestic, looking after a family that is totally dependent on her- old, ailing in-laws, a sexist husband and a school-going son- she is suddenly called into service to nab a psychopath who goes by the alias of “Common Man” (Sumeet Vyas) and makes a living by killing independent, confident women.
The film was announced in March 2021, following the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic in India. Shooting began in Kolkata amid the second wave in 2021. Actor Sumeet Vyas was reportedly infected with COVID-19 while in the middle of shooting for the film.
It’s quite rare to see a spy thriller in the comedy genre but the screenplay is so well written that it sets the mood well. The climax is a big disappointment as there is a lot of cinematic liberality. The songs are nice and add to the charm of the film as they are not lip-synced. The message that housewives, if they put their minds to something, can achieve anything is conveyed brilliantly without being didactic. The audience is already waiting for the second part which was teased at the end.
