India to Get Above Normal Rains From July to September as Southwest Monsoon Gathers Pace

India is set to witness above normal rains from July to December as the Southwest Monsoon picked up pace on Wednesday. The Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Climate Centre has predicted more than normal rains from July to September and October to December.

The latest APCC forecast has predicted an above normal Southwest Monsoon for the entire country from July to September and an above normal Northeast Monsoon rainfall from October to December for Tamil Nadu.

On Wednesday, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had also said that monsoon had gathered pace after having slowed down for a brief period. While the IMD had revised the rain forecast to below normal for June, it said that the Southwest monsoon was gathering pace and is expected to progress further in Maharashtra by June 21-22.

The APCC, meanwhile, has also forecast above normal temperatures in most parts of India between July and December. “Strongly enhanced probability for above normal temperatures is predicted for most region of the globe (excluding the eastern tropical and subtropical Pacific, Russia, the Sahel, India, southern South America, and the Antarctic). Enhanced probability for above normal temperatures is expected for Russia and the Antarctic,” the APCC said.

“Enhanced probability for below normal temperatures is predicted for the eastern equatorial Pacific,” the latest APCC forecast added.

The APCC also said that due to La Nina effect, the temperatures are expected to be -0.2℃ for July 2024 and then gradually decrease to -1.1℃ for December 2024. La Niña conditions are most probable for July – December 2024.
