Rahmanullah Gurbaz was on fire for Afghanistan in the ongoing ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 match against Uganda. In the Group C match taking place at the Providence Stadium in Guyana on Tuesday (June 4 IST), the right-handed wicketkeeper-batter opened the innings for the Rashid Khan-led side and, with the help of four fours and as many sixes, scored 76 runs from 45 balls. He added 154 runs for the first wicket with Ibrahim Zadran (70 runs from 46 balls) to help his side post a total of 183 runs for the loss of five wickets in 20 overs.
Gurbaz, who won the IPL 2024 title with the Kolkata Knight Riders last month, impressed with his batting after the Afghans were invited to bat first by Uganda skipper Brian Masaba. By scoring 76 runs in Afghanistan’s first match of the T20 World Cup 2024, he also created a new record. The 22-year-old right-handed batter now holds the record for scoring the most runs in a T20 World Cup match for Afghanistan. Before him, the record was held by Najibullah Zadran, who made 73 runs from 48 balls for Afghanistan against New Zealand in Abu Dhabi on November 7, 2021.

The 76-run knock on Tuesday morning (IST) also helped Gurbaz go past former Afghanistan skipper Asghar Afghan’s tally of 1382 runs and become the fourth-leading run scorer for his country in T20Is. Gurbaz has 1452 runs in 56 T20Is for Afghanistan now.
Former skipper Mohammad Nabi, who remained unbeaten on 14 runs from 16 balls against Uganda, holds the record for scoring most runs in T20Is for Afghanistan. The 39-year-old all-rounder has 2123 runs in 123 matches.
During the match against Uganda, Gurbaz’s 154-run partnership for the first wicket with Zadran helped the duo become the first Afghanistan pair and sixth overall to add 150 runs for any wicket. The record for the highest partnership in T20 World Cup history is in the name of Jos Buttler and Alex Hales of England, who scored 170 runs for the first wicket against India on November 10, 2022, in Adelaide.
