In what seems to be the summer of goalie trades in the NHL with Jacob Markstrom getting sent to New Jersey, Darcy Kuemper going to Los Angeles and Linus Ullmark going to the Ottawa Senators, the Vegas Golden Knights joined the trend Saturday morning when they traded Logan Thompson to the Washington Capitals in exchange for a 2024 3rd round pick in todays draft and a 2025 3rd round pick.
Thompson, 27, made his NHL debut for Vegas during the 20-21 season and went on to be a main stay for the organization in goal. Thompson is entering the last year of his contract that pays him $766k that upon expiry will become a UFA. Thompson is going to get a significant raise on his next deal which likely is one of the reasons that Knights GM Kelly McCrimmon decided to move him now, as with Adin Hill also being a potential UFA next season they were only going to be able to retain one.
Over the parts of 5 seasons spent in Vegas, Thompson compiled a record of 58-33-12 with a 2.66 GAA and .912 SV%. Thompson will be joining the Washington Capitals where he will form a 1A/1B goalie tandem with Charlie Lindgren, oddly enough making them a tandem of both right-handed catching goalies.
