LGBTQ+ issues in election manifestos
Do you know what the political parties are promising to the LGBTQ community ahead of this election? Let's start with the conservatives. Rishi Sunak said this about transgender people. A man is a man and a woman is a woman. That's just common sense. But what does that mean for policy? Conservatives had said they will update the definition of sex to mean biological sex in the Equality Act. They say this is to guarantee safety and privacy for biological women and girls. But this could also allow places like changing rooms and hospital wards to restrict access to transgender people. They also want to change regulations so that a person can only have one sex in the eyes of the law, excluding non binary people from legal documents. The Conservatives have also addressed HIV, which is an issue deeply cared about by people in the LGBTQ community. They promised to end new HIV transmissions by 20-30 by automatically testing people for HIV when they're admitted to emergency departments across England. So what about Labour? The Labour manifesto says they will make it easier for transgender people to legally register with their new gender once they get a medical diagnosis. The party has said they will ban conversion practices for LGBTQ plus people and promised to make hate crimes against the community and disabled people and aggravated offence. The Lib Dems have also promised to ban all forms of conversion therapy and practices. They promised to recognize non binary identities and law and to make it possible for trans people to change gender legally without the need for medical reports or their spouse's veto. The Green Party supports the right to self identification. This means it would be possible to change your gender on documents without the need for surgeries, a medical diagnosis or your spouse's permission. The Greens want to allow non binary and intersex people to register for documents, adding the X as one of the gender markers. Like the Tories, they've also promised to end all new cases of HIV by 20-30 by expanding HIV tests and providing better access to HIV prevention pills. Reform UK want to ban what they say is transgender ideologies in schools. This means no gender questioning, social transitioning or pronoun swapping in school and implementing the presence of only single sex toilets.
