Rath Yatra 2024: Chariot At Bengal’s Raiganj To Be Modelled After Karnataka’s Murudeshwar Temple

In West Bengal’s Raiganj, preparations are underway with fervour to create a majestic Golden Chariot that pays homage to the South Indian tradition. It is set to become the centrepiece of this year’s Rath Yatra. Valued at an estimated Rs 10 lakh, this chariot is being meticulously crafted from neem and sal wood, known for their durability and traditional significance. The initiative has gained significant momentum, particularly in Raiganj’s Beltala area of Debinagar, where skilled artisans are dedicatedly shaping every detail of this cultural marvel. The inspiration for this endeavour stems from Champak Brahma and his wife’s transformative visit to the Murudeshwar Temple in Karnataka four years ago, where they were deeply moved by the grandeur of the temple chariot. Motivated by this experience, they initiated the Rath Yatra in Raiganj, sparking a community effort to recreate a similar chariot that would symbolise devotion and cultural heritage.
Supported by a collaborative effort with local craftsmen and friends, the construction of the chariot has been ongoing for the past three months. The artisans, numbering between 26 to 27, bring their expertise in woodwork to fashion intricate designs and structural integrity into the chariot. Adorned in radiant golden hues, the chariot is nearing completion, promising to be a spectacle that will captivate the hearts of Raiganj’s residents as it majestically traverses through the city streets during the Rath Yatra. Anticipation is high among the locals, eagerly awaiting the grand unveiling of this cultural masterpiece, which not only showcases craftsmanship but also embodies the spiritual essence and communal spirit of Rath Yatra celebrations in Raiganj.
The Rath Yatra, also known as the Chariot Festival, is a significant Hindu festival celebrated predominantly in Eastern India, particularly in the state of Odisha and in West Bengal, as well as in other parts of the world where Hindu communities reside. The festival commemorates Lord Jagannath’s annual journey from his temple in Puri to the Gundicha Temple, located some distance away.
