Apple is improving third-party iPhone repairs, here’s how

Apple has been long reluctant to the idea of third-party repairs, but recently it has been opening up the iPhone and its other devices to third-party repair and even self-repair. Now, it is making some changes that’ll let third-party screens and batteries work better on iPhones. In a new whitepaper titled "Longevity, by Design" released on June 26, the iPhone maker outlined plans to extend software features to non-Apple components.

Key changes coming for third-party parts

Apple will allow True Tone to work on third-party screens. True Tone adjusts screen colours based on surrounding light. It usually only works with Apple's own screens. Now it will work with other screens too, though maybe not as well.

Another change is that Battery health information will show for third-party batteries. Things like maximum capacity and charge cycles will display. But Apple will add a note saying it can't verify if the information is correct.

These changes should happen later in 2024. They will likely come with iOS 18, the next big iPhone software update expected in September.

Apple still warns about safety risks

While offering more support, Apple still warns about risks with third-party parts. The company says some replacement batteries sold as new are actually used. Their health information may be faked to look new. Apple is especially worried about battery safety. It points to a study showing many third-party batteries failed safety tests. Some even caught fire or exploded.

The company urges people to make sure any parts meet safety standards. It will keep showing warnings when third-party parts are used.

Changes may help iPhones last longer

These updates could help iPhones work better for longer. People may be able to keep older phones working instead of buying new ones. The changes come as more US states pass "right to repair" laws. These laws say companies must let people fix their own devices. Apple may be trying to get ahead of these new rules. Apple says it wants to make products that last. It claims to balance durability, repairability, and safety. The company says it leads the industry in how long its products keep working and keep their value.

Other repair changes coming

Apple announced some other repair-related updates too. It will make it easier to reuse official Apple parts from one phone in another. People also won't need to share a phone's serial number to buy repair parts anymore.

The company will also expand its warning system for stolen phones. It will be able to track individual parts from phones marked as lost or stolen.
