However, the most sought-after segments are micro SUV, sub-compact, and compact. SUVs continue to dominate the Indian car market, and diesel engines have long been a popular choice for these powerful vehicles. While some manufacturers are shifting towards petrol, several brands still offer compelling diesel options under Rs 25 lakh. Let uss explore some of the top contenders.
Kia Seltos
Priced between Rs 10.90 lakh and Rs 20.35 lakh (both ex-showroom), the Seltos offers a variety of powertrain options. Its 1.5-litre, inline four-cylinder, turbo-diesel engine coupled to a six-speed iMT or a six-speed automatic transmission. It generates 116PS and 250Nm of torque. Meanwhile, there are also two petrol engine options.
Hyundai Be The Better Guy
Hyundai Creta
The Creta has been a successful model in its segment and is also one of the highest-seller for the brand. The SUV, which recently received an update, shares its engine options across Hyundai and Kia line-up. Apart from a 1.5-litre petrol and a 1.5-litre turbo petrol, it comes powered by a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder, turbocharged diesel motor delivering 116PS and 250Nm of torque. Transmission options include a six-speed manual and a six-speed automatic. Its prices start at Rs 11 lakh (ex-showroom) and go up to Rs 20.15 lakh (ex-showroom).
Mahindra Scorpio-N
The Scorpio-N has been priced between Rs 13.85 lakh (ex-showroom) and Rs 24.54 lakh (ex-showroom). Launched in June 2022, Mahindra offers the Scorpio-N with a petrol and diesel engine options. The diesel unit comes with two different states of tunes. The 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, turbo-petrol engine generates 203PS and 370Nm with MT or 380Nm with AT.
Mahindra XUV700
The Mahindra XUV700 should be your pick if you have a big family as it can accommodate up to seven passengers. Powering the XUV700 is a 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel motor with two different versions. In the low-spec variants, it produces 155PS and 360Nm of torque, while one available with higher-spec variants makes 185PS. The torque output is rated at 420Nm (with MT) and 450Nm (with AT). Mated to this engine is a six-speed manual and a six-speed automatic transmissions. Mahindra also offers an optional all-wheel drive system. Meanwhile, the XUV700 costs Rs 13.99-26.99 lakh (ex-showroom).
Tata Harrier
The Harrier and its elder sibling, the Safari, share the same diesel engine. This SUV has never offered a petrol powertrain as of now. Coming back to its diesel unit, it comes powered by a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine (the same as the Hector) mated to a six-speed manual and a new automatic transmission.
