The Financial Services Institutions Bureau (FSIB) today, June 29, recommended the name of Challa Sreenivasulu Setty for the position of the next Chairman of the State Bank of India (SBI). The government panel said it decided to go by CS Setty's name after meeting three candidates for the post.
The incumbent chairman, Dinesh Kumar Khara, is retiring on August 28, as he turns 63, following his extension on October 7 last year. He was appointed chairman of the country's largest public sector bank on October 7, 2020.
FSIB, in a notification on Saturday, said: "The Financial Services Institutions Bureau interfaced with 3 candidates on June 29, 2024 for the position of Chairman in State Bank of India (SBI)."

The bureau added that keeping in view their performance and experience, Setty was their choice for the job. "Keeping in view their performance in the interface, their overall experience and the extant parameters, the Bureau recommends Shri Challa Sreenivasulu Setty for the position of Chairman in SBI," it added.

Challa Sreenivasulu Setty is in charge as Managing Director of SBI. He was made the MD with effect from January 20, 2020 and from April 1, 2020, he is looking after retail and digital banking.
A Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and also, a Certified Associate of Indian Institute of Bankers, he started his career with SBI in 1988 as a Probationary Officer.

Across a career spanning over three decades, he has gained rich experience in Corporate Credit, Retail banking and banking in developed markets.
Prior being elevated to the post of MD, Setty was heading the Stressed Asset Resolution Group of the Bank, in his capacity as Deputy Managing Director. He was responsible for resolving the stressed assets portfolio of the Bank, across the country, in different sectors such as Power, Infra, Auto, Telecom etc.
Setty has held key assignments in SBI, including Chief General Manager and General Manager in Corporate Accounts Group, Deputy General Manager in Commercial Branch, Indore and VP & Head (syndications) in SBI, New York Branch.
