Millions in the UK are struggling to pay their bills, afford the increasing cost of food and drink, or even keep a roof over their heads.

Prices remain much higher than they were a few years ago. Government figures show that absolute poverty has increased for two consecutive years; there are nearly a million more people in poverty in 2022/23 than in 21/22.

In the capital, a poll showed one in four Londoners could not afford an unexpected £50 bill.

The Savanta for the Centre for London poll reveals how many households in the capital are grappling with the cost of living crisis.

It found:

Fourteen per cent said they could not afford an unexpected bill of £20 without help.

Twenty-five per cent said they would be in such a position if it was £50.

Three in ten (30 per cent) consider food unaffordable.

Nearly half (49 per cent) believe energy to heat and power homes to be unaffordable.

Less than half (44 per cent) could afford a surprise bill in full of £250.

Only a third (36 per cent) would be able to if it was £500.

The benefits and pension payments being sent out mostly as normal in June are:

Universal Credit

State pension

Pension credit

Child benefit

Disability living allowance

Personal independence payment

Attendance allowance

Carer’s allowance

Employment support allowance

Income support

Jobseeker’s allowance

The date your benefit is paid depends on what benefit you receive and when you started claiming.

Payments will be received on the usual dates as there are no bank holidays in June.

Will benefits increase in June 2024?

Benefits increased by 6.7 per cent from April 8 for many who claim them.

However, for some universal credit claimants, the increased rates will take effect in June.  This is because the new rate is not paid until the first assessment period which begins on or after April 8.
