It would be safe to say that the Philadelphia 76ers have made their fair share of mistakes in recent years. Letting Jimmy Butler go has to be near the top of the list.
In the five seasons since then, the 76ers have never gotten past the conference semifinals. On the other hand, Butler has guided the Miami Heat to two NBA Finals appearances.
Over his five seasons in Miami, Butler has averaged 21.3 points, 6.1 rebounds and 5.7 assists in 291 games for the Heat.
Naturally, many 76ers fans wonder what a trio of Butler, Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey could have achieved together.
Well, that dream trio could become a reality this summer. At least there is the potential for it to happen.
Butler is believed to be seeking a max contract extension from the Heat, who seem reluctant to hand it to him. That has led to trade rumors.
The 76ers are one of the teams believed to have an eye on Butler, as they look to build a roster capable of challenging for a Championship. There are few players as good as the 34-year-old when it comes to the post-season. He is called 'Playoff Jimmy' for a reason.
It does seem like the franchise's interest is quite serious. According to Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer, sources continue to say that the 76ers plan to give Butler a maximum salary extension if they can acquire him in a trade. But as of Tuesday, a source said that was unlikely because of the Heat's unwillingness to part ways with the 34-year-old.
What does the future hold for Butler and the Heat? Time shall tell. For now, we can only wait and watch.
If Butler does end up becoming available for a trade, the 76ers must make the call and see what it would take to bring him back to the City of Brotherly Love.
