The USA have scripted history by qualifying for the Super Eight stage of the Men’s T20 World Cup in their first-ever appearance at the marquee-tournament. USA' Super Eight qualification was confirmed on Friday after their Group A game against Ireland was washed out, with the two sides sharing a point each.
The washout ended any qualification permutations in Group A, with Ireland’s hopes of reaching the Super Eight coming to an end and Pakistan also confirmed as exiting the tournament at the group stage.
The tournament co-hosts USA defeated Canada by seven wickets in a high-scoring game before edging out Pakistan in a thrilling Super Over finish to make its debut appearance in the T20 World Cup a memorable one. Their only loss came against India.
The India-born Saurabh Netravalkar, who switched to the USA early in his cricketing career, has been a key performer for the team during the ongoing tournament.
The 32-year-old has represented Mumbai and played age-group cricket alongside Indian captain Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav. He is currently working as an AI engineer with tech giant Oracle.
The pacer has picked four wickets so far in the tournament. After taking two wickets against Pakistan, Netravalkar dismissed Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli during India vs USA clash.
As the USA qualified for the Super 8 stage and secured a direct berth in the next edition of the T20 World Cup in 2026, Oracle congratulated its AI engineer Netravalkar.
"So proud of our very own AI engineer and cricket star @Saurabh_Netra! @usacricket making history in #T20WorldCup,” Oracle wrote on its official X account.
Netravalkar also responded to the message from his employers and thanked them for the support.
"Thank you so much @Oracle for your support in enabling me to pursue my passion alongside my tech career!" wrote the USA pacer.
Earlier, USA cricketer's sister Nidhi Netravalkar had revealed how he balances cricket and work. According to Nidhi, Saurabh is extremely passionate towards his job, and he even works in the hotel after the matches.
"He's been very fortunate to have people who have always supported him throughout his career. He knows that when he's not playing cricket, he has to give 100 per cent to the job. So right now, when he's working, he carries his laptop everywhere. And he has the freedom to work from anywhere," Nidhi told News 18.
"Even when he comes to India, he brings his laptop. He's working. So after the match in the hotel, he's doing his work. He is pretty dedicated like that," she added.
