‘Downton Abbey 3' Sets Fall 2025 Global Release in Theaters

Downton Abbey 3 has decided on its theatrical release date.

The third film in the small screen-to-big screen franchise will open in cinemas globally on Sept. 12, 2025, Focus Features announced Wednesday. Universal Pictures International is handling the movie overseas.

Focus Features and Carnival Films are partnering on Downton Abbey 3, which will be written by Julian Fellowes, the scribe who created the acclaimed TV show that ran from 2010-15. Simon Curtis is returning to direct after helming 2022's Downton Abbey: A New Era.

A New Era opened in theaters in May 2022 when the box office was still recovering from the pandemic. The first film, like the upcoming movie, was released in the first half of September 2019 on its way to grossing nearly $200 million worldwide. A New Era topped out at $92.7 million.

Along with Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, and Michelle Dockery, the returning cast includes Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter, Phyllis Logan, Robert James-Collier, Joanne Froggatt, Allen Leech, Penelope Wilton, Lesley Nicol, Michael Fox, Raquel Cassidy, Brendan Coyle, Kevin Doyle, Harry Hadden-Paton, Sophie McShera and Douglas Reith.

Paul Giamatti, fresh off an Oscar nomination for The Holdovers, is reprising his role as Cora Grantham's brother, Harold Levinson. Joely Richardson, Alessandro Nivola, Simon Russell Beale, and Arty Froushan are among the film franchise newcomers. Elsewhere, Dominic West will also reprise his role as Guy Dexter from Downton Abbey: A New Era.

Downton Abbey 3 is currently in production in the UK. Producers include Gareth Neame, Fellowes and Liz Trubridge.
