Olly Murs leads England backlash as famous faces fume at 'snoozefest' Euros

Olly Murs hit out at the England football team as he branded their Euros campaign a "snoozefest".

England fans booed and threw plastic cups at the Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate following the goalless draw against Slovenia on Tuesday night. It was their second draw in two matches as the Euro 2024 group stages came to an end. Singer Olly took to his social media to share his support for the team before the match.

He posed in his England shirt alongside his mates and wrote: "We're ready for it." However, by the time the game reached the halfway mark Olly was falling asleep on his sofa. The former X Factor star shared a snap of him dozing off and captioned it: "H/T 0-0 Snoozing'ell."

The new dad shared his disappointment further with a rendition of his hit song Heart Skips a Beat. He sang: "So Saka spin me around because football is not going to come home, and when you cross it to Kane you make my heart skip, skip a beat." Olly rounded off the song with a huge sigh.

Piers Morgan also took to social media to hit out at the team as he wrote on X: "This is so bad. It’s like watching Arsenal in slow-motion. Where’s the energy, the urgency, the fluency? World class players moving around like snails." After the match, the broadcaster fumed: "Jeez. That was dire. #England."

He then took aim at Southgate as he commented: "Southgate whining about the supposedly ‘strange environment we’re playing in’ was very weird. The environment is same as normal: play well, get praised, play badly, get criticised. End." Singer Jake Quickenden added: "I'm sorry but this England team ain't it... no urgency at all. No final product." The Apprentice star Thomas Skinner made a cheeky dig as he commented: "Gareth Southgate wears a seatbelt when he sits on the toilet. Pass it on Bosh."

Fans in the stadium echoed their thoughts on the match as when Southgate made his way over to them at full-time, they did not give the England boss a kind reception. Some even took aim with plastic cups and boos. But the 53-year-old continued to clap the fans despite the clear discontent he conjured amongst them.

“I understand the reactions but it is a tough environment," Southgate told ITV. "We tried to win the game by the changes we made. We put attacking players on the pitch. I understand the narrative towards me. That's better for the team than it being towards them. But it's creating an unusual environment to operate in. I've not seen any other team qualify and receive similar."

The manager also took to BBC Radio 5 Live where he called on England fans to support the team. “They were brilliant, in the second half especially there was a constant noise around the team,” he said. “I get it that they are not happy with me, that is the reality, I am not going to back away from that. I need them behind the team."

Southgate added: "I have to deal with what I am dealing with. I was not going to back away from going over to thank people for coming and giving the support that they did, but I know that this is causing an issue for the group. I can deal with that but I need them to support the players. The more the fans are like they were in the second half, behind the team it is a massive lift for them, because we are operating in a very, very unusual environment."
